William James Corcoran (Bill) died peacefully at home on 29th January 2006 after a long fight against cancer.
He leaves behind wife Maureen, children Sharon and Gavin and four Grandchildren.
The funeral took place on Monday 6th February 2006 at All Saints Church Oakham, followed by the Committal at Grantham. The service was conducted by the Rev Jay Ridley, who worked with Bill at Ashwell Prison, where Bill was a Catering Manager and Jay Prison Chaplain.

Bill was born in Liverpool in 1935, where he spent his early years. With the onset of war he was evacuated to Herefordshire. With the end of the war came a move back to Liverpool where he attended Waterloo Grammar School.
In 1953 he embarked on a 22 year career in the RAF. As an RAF Policeman he had many overseas tours; two in Cyprus, two in Aden, and one each in Bahrain and Singapore, and was even parachuted into Suez during the troubles in that area.
Whilst he was stationed at RAF Cottesmore in 1961 he met and married Oakham girl Maureen.
During the last four years of his service he transferred to Management Services. He attended Bristol University and completed a course in Organisation and Methods and Computer Appreciation.

Upon retiring from the RAF he worked for TW Kempton a knitwear company in Leicester as a Work Study O & M Manager, he then went on to work as Factory Manager for the same company in Grantham.
In 1979 Bill joined Universal Underwear Textiles Ltd working at Leicester and then Tattershall as Systems Manager.
In 1983 he changed his career and joined the Prison Service where he worked at Leicester, Gartree and Ashwell Prisons before retiring aged 60.

Bill had a keen interest in sport. During his early years in the RAF he was a keen athlete running the 100 yards and Furlong. He loved rugby both as a player and in his later years as a Leicester Tigers supporter. He was a member of Greetham Valley Golf Club, where he taught his Grandson Jonathan, at the age of seven, to play the game.
Bill joined the Lions Club of Rutland in 1985. In 1995 he was Club President. He was also a member of the Rutland Society of St George.
He was an Oakham Town Councillor and was Deputy Mayor in 2003/4. Sadly he was diagnosed with cancer one week before he would have taken up the Office of Town Mayor.

He was vice-Chairman of the Rutland County Council Standards Committee.
Bill was a School Governor at Oakham C of E Primary School who nominated him and his wife Maureen to attend a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in July 2005, where they were introduced to the Queen.

Although very involved in community affairs Bill did not let his commitments prevent him taking an active role as a family man. He took great delight in all of his Grandchildren of whom he was very proud.

He will be sadly missed by his family and all who knew him.
